The Milwaukee Standard: a benchmark for transparency

Veolia has been proud to serve the Milwaukee community since 2008. We are demonstrating that pride with the Milwaukee Standard, a set of commitments that will carry through the remainder of our contract and reflect our commitment to MMSD and this city, today and in the years ahead.

The Milwaukee Standard begins with a continued commitment to transparency in all respects, and the following new initiatives to further strengthen our partnership with MMSD and our community.

Reinforcing transparency

An independent, third-party review of our contract performance and environmental compliance across both facilities will be commissioned and funded by Veolia, with findings delivered publicly to MMSD commissioners.

Giving the community a real voice

Veolia is working with MMSD to establish a standing Community Advisory Panel, with representation and a diversity of voices from across Milwaukee to strengthen Veolia’s connection to and communication with the community. The CAP will be empowered to bring concerns and ideas directly to local leadership, and hear about what’s going on at the plants on a regular basis.

Protecting our employees

An annual Worker Safety Transparency Report will capture the safety and working conditions of our Milwaukee employees, including direct feedback from our workforce at both sites.

The Lake Michigan Legacy Project

At the center of everything we do here is Lake Michigan. The Lake Michigan Legacy Project formalizes our foundational investment in the future of Milwaukee’s most vital natural resource, beyond environmental benchmarks. This commitment prioritizes long term ecological health, community-led stewardship and education, and enhanced public and recreational access to our most treasured resource.

Empowering citizens of Milwaukee: the Community Prosperity Pledge

The Community Prosperity Pledge. This is Veolia’s commitment to ensure that our operational presence serves as an engine for economic mobility, civic engagement, and social equity in Milwaukee. Our responsibility does not stop at the facility fence, rather the health, stability, and future prosperity of the neighborhoods around us are part of the job. Existing workforce partnerships and offerings will be expanded, as will our commitments to structured mentorship and training programs. This pledge also includes a focus on social impact, enhanced open door policies, and expanding community programs.
