Lake protection

Protecting Lake Michigan is the core mission of the Jones Island and South Shore facilities, and it guides every operational decision, compliance standard and regulatory filing. Wastewater is treated to strict state standards, and even more strict contractual standards, before it is returned to the lake, and discharge quality is continuously measured, reported and regulated to protect public health and the environment.

Lynyrd Skymmr River Clean Up

The Lynyrd Skymmr is a 50-foot-long river skimmer that cruises Milwaukee‘s waterways several times a week to collect floating debris. Trash and debris wash off the land and into the riverways during rainstorms, eventually floating as unsightly “rafts” on the surface of the rivers. The Lynyrd Skymmr picks up everything from dead fish, plastic bottles, branches and other refuse cleaning the Milwaukee, Menomonee and Kinnickinnic Rivers, and the inner harbor, where the three rivers converge before heading out into Lake Michigan. It’s a partnership between the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD), Veolia Water Milwaukee which operates the skimmer, Port of Milwaukee and the City.
